M.Sc Reserch Guidelines

M.Sc. Research is a 6 credit hour project which is evaluated through external examination process. Students register themselves in 4th semester, but supervisors are allotted in the third semester so that students could start their work well before time under the supervision of any of the faculty member. Following are some administrative rules:

  • Students are allotted randomly without any discretion and bias. They are not allowed to change the supervisor until or unless there is any sound reason for it. This change can only be considered with the permission of the Director.
  • All the procedure involved from allotment of supervisors to viva voce examination is coordinated by a research coordinator.
  • A research orientation seminar for M.Sc. students is conducted by the research coordinator which is must for all supervisors and students to attend. In this forum information regarding M.Sc. research, requirements to fulfill the tasks and related queries are addressed. Research guidelines are shared and it is stressed that these must be adhered to for the completion of final dissertation.

Synopsis Submission

  • At the first step students are required to submit their synopsis to the supervisor and they also present their research plan in front of the whole faculty and their class mates. This gives a good opportunity to students and respective supervisors to reformulate their research plan in the light of suggestions given at this forum.

Monthly Progress Report

  • Supervisors give the monthly progress report of their respective students by evaluating them on the milestones to be covered in a month as given in the progress sheet. This is marked as satisfactory or unsatisfactory. For two consecutive unsatisfactory reports written explanation letter is given to the respective student.

Meetings with Supervisors

  • Students are bound to meet twice a week with their supervisors. However, if students have any concerns related to supervision they can have a meeting with research coordinator to resolve the issues.

Thesis submission and Viva voce

  • Submission of thesis in the Institute is taken to be a week before the date given by university in its semester plan because of various administrative reasons.
  • External-examiners who are expert in the field of psychology are invited from all over the Pakistan to act as examiners to evaluate the thesis in a very thorough and detailed manner.
  • Viva voce examination is conducted in a panel of which external examiner, the Director, supervisor and research coordinator are members.

Salient Features for M. Sc research report writing

  • It is strongly recommended that the students should select topic of their research their area of specialization.  However, the interest of the student and its compatibility with area of interest with the supervisor is also considered.
  • Development, adaptation or translation of the scales is discouraged at M.Sc. level until the supervisor is convinced that it is important to consider these for the better outcome of the research and that the student is capable enough to complete her work within the defined time period.
  • Students are not allowed to collect the data from city other than Rawalpindi/ Islamabad. It should be allowed only if there is no other way out and also it is the responsibility of the student then to complete the data collection within the desired time period.
  • Follow the APA manual for report writing. In the reference sections, students are required to quote primary references only. Only authentic and time tested websites should be consulted and referred to in the report.
  • Plagiarism (e.g., copy-paste activity) is never appreciated while writing research report.
  • Students are required to take prior permission from the author or TRC of NIP to use any scale in his/ her research. To meet the ethics of the research, if data is to be collected from some organization/ institute prior permission from the concerned authorities must be taken.
