The workshop was exclusively held for PhD scholars in order to facilitate them on their PhD journey. Dr. Christopher Alan Lewis, Professor, Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit, Centre for Education Studies, University of Warwick, UK was the resource person for this workshop. Over the last 20 years, Dr. Lewis has examined over 50 PhDs and Professional Doctorates, primarily in the UK, but also in Australia, Belgium, Czech Republic, and Pakistan. Throughout the workshop, the resource person reflected on his experiences as an external examiner for PhD theses. The primary focus was on the identification of common strengths and weaknesses found in PhD work. Discussion of these matters was supplemented by a “Question and Answer” session related to the PhD journey, and beyond.

Psychological Insights for Planning, Training and Developing Protocols for Effective communication in Emergencies and Crisis

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Darshan Perera, Chair of the Faculty of Colombo Institute of Research and Psychology, Sri Lanka. With the increasing rate of both natural and manmade disasters around the world, many of us are interested in finding out ways of reducing negative outcomes of these events. One important aspect that saves lives in these situations is effective communication. This workshop highlighted the changes that occur in the way we receive and analyze information and therefore how we understand and respond to information in emergency situations. Touching upon brain activity the resource person emphasized the points that should be taken in to consideration in training and developing manuals, guides and protocols for communication in emergencies and crises.

A helpful step by step guide to publishing was provided, along with published examples.

Mental Health Mind Technologies

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Imran Y. Muhammad (Sitara-e- Imtiaz) and Dr. Sobia Aftab on 23rd November, 2018. The resource persons designed their sessions to teach and train participants the application of various mind technologies (including Hypnotherapy & NLP) interventions and techniques with particular focus as applied in the field of mental health practice. The workshop offered participants effective and practical guidelines to: discover and learn the intrinsic and unconscious link between thoughts, feelings, physiology and behavior; learn techniques and strategies to communicate and understand and respond to clients in an effective manner; develop strategies and skills to make the communication right between conscious and unconscious; learn techniques to restructure the impoverished and unrealistic unconscious map of the world; and become familiar with the practical application of mind technologies therapeutic interventions to get rid of mental blocks, toxic thinking, fears, old habits, emotional exhaustion, or hurtful past events.

Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis: Theory and Advanced Data Analysis (Level II)

The workshop was conducted on 16th November, 2018. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) is a qualitative approach which aims to provide detailed examinations of personal lived experience. Though IPA first found popularity in health psychology, it is now increasingly being employed in a wide range of areas both within and beyond psychology. The workshop covered interpretative phenomenological analysis as a distinctive qualitative approach to psychological research. It briefly discussed its epistemological orientation and the sorts of research questions to which it could be applied. This was followed by a description of suitable methods of data collection, in particular the semi-structured interview and what interviewing skills are required by an IPA researcher. A set of brief guidelines for the stages of analysis were also shared with the participants.

Understanding and Using NVIVO

The workshop was held on 16th November, 2018 and was primarily designed for M. Phil and PhD scholars. The main objective of the workshop was to enable participants to handle their qualitative data independently on NVIVO 11. It was divided into halves: the first half consisted of introduction of qualitative research and NVIVO while the second half focused on the actual use of NVIVO 11. Participants were offered hands-on practice that aimed to enable them to understand terminology used in NVIVO; develop memos, relationships and graphic representation of the data; import and export word and PDF documents, video and audio files and survey monkey data; and create and encode projects.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA): Preparing Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)

The workshop was conducted on 14th Nov. 2018. ABA, an evidence-based “best” practice treatment by the US Surgeon General and by the American Psychological Association, can be effectively used to reduce maladaptive and problematic behaviors while it also effectively enhances desired and appropriate behaviors of children 12 years and younger. This training workshop inculcated an in-depth knowledge about what ABA is and how different principles and techniques of ABA can be applied to deal with behavioral issues of younger children. It also helped students and practitioners of psychology in developing an individual plan specially designed to help such a child.

Assessing Intelligence by Using Raven's Progressive Matrices

The workshop was practice-oriented and took participants through administration, scoring and interpretation of the tool as recommended by its manual.

Dealing with Children in Special Education: Practical Considerations

The one hour theory session covered relevant introductory information about the how and why of dealing with special needs children, mainstreaming vs segregation, application of psychological tests, developing classroom practices for special classes and developing IEPs and transition plans. The two-hour practice session covered hands-on activities designed for participants to learn administration of relevant psychological tests, strategies for classroom teaching of special children such as Intellectually delayed, ADHD, autism , wheelchair bound children and development of IEP/transition plans.

From conceiving the idea of a presentation till its delivery in front of audience needs certain set of skills which are easier to learn and practice in real life situations. The workshop focused on developing and improving the essentials of presentation skills including dress code, verbal and non-verbal expressions, and outlook of presentation. It included practice sessions on how to make a good presentation and how to improve verbal skills using smartphones.

Fostering Compassion towards Self

It was targeted to generate know-how of self-system with primary emphasis on learning about a very handy self-help skill termed as self-compassion and was designed to induce the positive energies within oneself that serves to fuel the depleted energies and intended to bring in a handful of experience for those undergoing tough circumstances and having a self-critical response, those knowing somebody else undergoing hardship and dealing it with self-criticism, those planning to study self-compassion and even those interested in building up know-how of contemporary self-help approaches in positive psychology. The resource person was successfully able to offer a platform for learning about a really beneficial technique following the dictum of positive psychology and coupled up her presentation about the main theme along with various demonstrations to enhance practice based learning.

Essential Skills for Counseling Process and Handling Anxieties and Fears

Dr. Nelofer Kiran Rauf, Ms. Raiha Aftab and Ms. Saira Khan conducted the workshop on 17th October, 2018. The workshop was built on the need to aid budding counselors to develop a personal style of counseling and to help them develop protocols to deal with client needs. Anxieties and fears related to everyday life were used as an impetus for the workshop. The workshop was a hands-on activity that comprised of four sessions; each focusing on some important aspect of the process of counseling. The first session was an orientation to the workshop and an ice breaking session. The second session was an introduction to the processes and practices that are part of a counseling process. The third session focused on introducing identified skills and techniques that are used in counseling setups to attend to a client and their presenting complaints. The final session helped the participants develop and practice skills for dealing with anxiety and fear related problems/issues.

The main objective of the workshop was to provide participants with guidance on various aspects of the writing process using the APA Publication Manual. The resource persons went through the APA Publication Manual chapter by chapter and provided guidance to the participants on multiple aspects of the APA writing style including types of publications and ethical considerations for research, manuscript structure and content, mechanics of writing style such as punctuation, spelling, capitalization, abbreviations, numbers, and statistics in text, references and citations, headings, treatment of mathematical data, tables and figures. They used numerous hands-on activities and exercises to offer thorough guidance to the participants on the rules of APA style of writing for strong, simple, and elegant scientific communication.

The Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test (Bender-Gestalt II)

On 2nd October, 2018, Dr. Syeda Razia Bukhari, Assistant Professor and Consultant Clinical Psychologist from the Department of Clinical Psychology at Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University Islamabad conducted a one-day training workshop on Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test (Bender-Gestalt II). The Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test (Bender-Gestalt II) is a brief assessment of visual-motor integration that may provide interpretive information about an individual's development and neuro-psychological functioning. The resource person started the first session of the workshop with the introduction, history and overview of BGT-II and moved on to its objectives, norms, and psychometrics. The second session focused on BGT-II’s administration, scoring, interpretation and report writing and was thoroughly backed with several hands-on activities and a couple of role plays for the participants.

Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis: Introduction and Advanced Data Analysis

Dr. Fahad Riaz Choudhry, a clinical psychologist who has recently finished his PhD from Monash University, Australia conducted this day-long workshop on Tuesday, 25th September, 2018. The workshop focused on understanding the use of IPA and its philosophical underpinnings and hands on training session on in-depth data analysis in IPA. The main objectives of the workshop were to provide an opportunity to the participants to understand the theory of IPA and to learn advanced qualitative data analysis using IPA. Lecturing, practice sessions and group activities were used by the resource person to meet the workshop objectives. The content covered by the resource person during the workshop included introduction to different methods of qualitative research, hermeneutics, phenomenology/lived experiences, a case study by Jonathan Smith, sampling in IPA studies, mixed method and/or IPA?, data collection in IPA, 3 levels of in-depth data analysis in IPA, and distinctive analysis feature of IPA than thematic analysis and other approaches.

Implementation of Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD

On 16th August 2018, Dr. Maleeha Abbas from the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System Seattle, WA, USA conducted a beginner level training in the use of Prolonged Exposure Therapy for survivors of trauma. The resource person, because of her extensive clinical experiences in the areas of trauma, substance use disorders and severe psychopathology with adults in diverse community mental health settings in the US, very effectively covered the basics of all components of PE and discussed in detail the empirically-supported, psychotherapeutic treatments for chronic PTSD and the comparative efficacy of these treatment approaches. She gave ideas about implementing treatment components including psycho-education, breathing retraining, in-vivo exposure and imaginal exposure and also on how to modify PE procedures in order to tailor the treatment to the client’s response to exposure. Interactive lecture, discussion, case examples and learning videos were used to accomplish the goals of the workshop.

Building Resilience in Mental Health Professionals

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Ambrin F. Masood, a School Psychologist and Assistant Professor at the College of Allied Health Professions Montana State University Billings, USA on 8th August, 2018. This workshop aimed to equip mental health students and professionals with the skills and knowledge of resilience, character strengths and a thriving life – the elements of which are summarized as PERMA (positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning & achievement) as per Seligman (2011). The resource person started the workshop by introducing the concept of resilience and went on to highlight its basic philosophy, the mental factors that contribute to it. Later, she talked about the role of cognitive restructuring and enhanced performance skills to promoting a sense of control and self-confidence, and managing change effectively and responsibly to ensure that change is seen as an opportunity rather than a roadblock. Hands–on group and individual exercises throughout the workshop kept the audience interested and engaged in the daylong session.

Understanding Autism and its Management: An ABA Approach

Mr. Mansur Choudry, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Director Autism Clinic Jeffrey and Theresa McDougall Special Care Oklahoma City, USA and Associate Professor at the University of Central Oklahoma USA conducted this eagerly awaited workshop on 6th August, 2018. The main objective of the workshop was to promote awareness among psychology students, professionals and parents about working with children suffering from the Autism Spectrum Disorder. The resource person aptly led an interactive session to help the participants understand autism and the practical strategic tools to use when dealing with children on the spectrum. He walked the participants through the stages of grief that parents experience, to seeking intervention and remediation for their child. He emphasized on the need to learn how to help parents make the right choices and decisions for their autistic child’s needs and disseminated the knowledge on Applied Behavior Analysis based intervention to deal with Autism. The diverse audience of the workshop consisting of students, professionals and parents of autistic children greatly benefited from the session.

Pains and Pleasures of Parenting

As has been the case in the past, the National Institute of Psychology has organized a series of pre-conference workshops for its upcoming 7th International Conference scheduled to be held on November 29-30, 2018.


The first pre-conference workshop of the series was held on 25th June, 2018. The resource person for the one-day workshop titled ‘Pains and Pleasures of Parenting’ was renowned psychologist and former NIP Director, Prof. (Retd.) Dr. Seema Pervez. The workshop had an interactive and participatory format and intended to facilitate parents of school going children. The resource person, very effectively, shared the problems parents might face while raising their children, provided some guidelines for better parenting and suggested practical ways of releasing the stress created by children’s behavior and attitude. Throughout the day, Dr. Seema Pervez encouraged the participants to share their personal parenting experiences and offered them specific advice which made the session even more interesting and worthwhile.
