The seminar titled “Psychological Effects of Terrorism on Youth” delivered by Dr. Rubina Hanif (Assistant Professor, NIP) on January 21st, 2011 at 4:30 to 5: 30 P.M in Room No. 006. Some of the points that were highlighted in seminar are as follows:

Terrorism can be defined as the act of violence intentionally perpetrated on civilian non combatants with the goal of furthering some ideological, religious or political objectives. The illegal use or threatened use of force or violence. The fact of the matter is that the more we try to define it, more complex and obscure it becomes because the roots of terrorism are complex and multifaceted.

Different approaches to understand terrorism were discussed and it was emphasized that it usually results from multi causal factors…..not only psychological but also economic, political, religious, and social factors, among others. i.e., ethnic conflicts, religious and ideological conflicts, poverty, modernization stresses, political inequalities, lack of peaceful communication channels, traditions of violence, the existence of a revolutionary group, governmental weakness and ineptness, erosions of confidence in a regime, and deep divisions within government elites and leadership groups.

The vulnerable population of terrorism are children/adolescents, racial, and ethnic minorities, and those with an existing psychiatric illness. Individual effects of terrorism includes mental health, psychological and emotional well being, problematic behaviors such as rigidity and intolerance that lead to increase in anger/ aggression that may be exhibited in violent behaviors. Negative beliefs and schemas lead to anti social behaviors. Poor concentration that decreases performance at schools/ colleges. Psychosomatic complaints due to frustration, restlessness, fatigued, excessive manifestation of anxiety, post traumatic symptoms, sleep disturbances. The level of effect may vary from individual to broader level.

To encounter terrorism some of the following points were highlighted at the end of the lecture

• Role of education and media in counter terrorism were highlighted including curriculum, teaching strategies, different system of education (i.e., English medium/ private, government/ English- urdu medium, and madrassas, teachers training programs, and capacity building

• Teaching through media and educational institutes focused on development of strength and new abilities, altruism or unselfish concerns for the welfare of others, sharing emotions with others, positive emotions

• Psycho education and emotional support, crises management, stress management, crises counseling, management of psychological consequences of the event and the responses, and grief counseling.

The organization of 1st Pakistan Knowledge Festival was a great effort by ministry of education to provide opportunity to the academic institutions from all over Pakistan to present their programs and services at a national forum for the better awareness of the youth.
